A Tale of Two Students

Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

There is this student, en elected member of the student council, who I have been slighting in broad strokes in the social networks we both belong to. This is because his posts are full of typos and grammatical errors, and he seems to see nothing wrong with admitting to the world at large that he did not even know that finals had already started, or that he is among those camping out at the chapel at this time of the term because he is in danger of failing in three subjects.

So much for role models; that would probably be one of my sticking points in their leadership camp follow-up on Friday.

Another plan I have is to have the students evaluate not just the activities for the first term, but also the activities for the past year particularly the second term that they will be repeating.

That includes the month of the teachers, the sports fest opening, the Halloween week and the talent show.

Since the directors also brought it up, I will be asking the students also to come up with their pledge for the prioritization of their studies over student activities, with the clause of stepping down if their grades slip.

I wonder if they will resist, and what kind of excuses they will come up with just so they could stay in position.

@@ On to my classes, the other night, when we were at the play about voter education, I received a text message from one of my students in the astronomy class, one who, in fact, may have seen this journal before.

First of all, pet peeve, the text just said she wanted to ask a question. What is the use of the obviousness again?

Is it to prepare both parties for something that may be unpleasant? Then why do students still say that when they step up to the microphone at the open forum of the seminars we set up?

Is it because the person speaking needs some more time to organize his or her thoughts? Is it to give the other person the chance to say No? That is something I have not tried to answer that I could.

Anyway, I already have an idea (if she is reading this) what she wants to ask me. She missed one of the exams.

I have kept putting off giving her classmates their results by saying she has not taken the make up exam yet.

That did not work, sadly, in making her take the initiative to approach me about when she could schedule it.

Besides that, I know that she did not submit one of the requirements, the month long observation of the phases of the moon.

It would be good if she is apprehensive right now that she will fail, because it is a solid possibility.

And I hope she does not expect that, like is some of their other subjects she complained to me about before, that it is possible that she could just get a passing grade without any effort, and be proud of it.

Session 2783 has the speech for tomorrow prepared. Class dismissed.
